The Magic of Manuka

While all honey has medicinal value, the Manuka variety is transcendental. It comes from New Zealand’s native Manuka bush, which produces a flower containing methylglyoxal (MGO). MGO is a compound clinically shown to possess antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and even anticarcinogenic properties.

Several hundred years ago, our ancestors discovered the medicinal benefits of Manuka. To this day, it is used in both at-home and hospital settings for wound healing. A 2021 study by Zydus Medical College and Hospital showed that the use of Manuka “proved to promote the growth of tissues for wound repair, suppress inflammation, and bring about rapid autolytic debridement.”

Manuka is graded using Unique Manuka Factor (UMF) and MGO scales. UMF is an in-depth system, accounting for MGO content, purity, and a multi-chemical analysis. Conversely, the MGO scale simply measures for the presence of its name. Ratings over 20UMF/ MGO800 are considered to be of superior antibacterial grade.

Our two wound care products, the Manuka Honey Salve and First Aid Spray, contain 20UMF/ MGO829 Manuka. Both formulations, featuring a blend of Manuka and healing plant extracts, create the ultimate wound care tools- all thanks to the bees of New Zealand.
